The French Highwayman's Coat is quite a piece. Manufactured by Windlass, this jacket is prepared to handle just about anything you can throw at it. Made of heavy black denim the Highwayman's Coat is just as rugged as those buccaneers who donned it. The coat is full length and is designed with a generous split in the back, as well as in the sides, specifically to improve the ease of movement. These splits also allow for the wearing of a sword and baldric. As was typical with this type of coat, the wide, laced double collar can be worn either up to conceal the face, or worn in the typical down position. The sleeves feature a wide cuff adorned with braids and buttons, and the coat is finished with two standard waist pockets and a button down front closure.

The French Highwayman's Coat is available in three sizes S/M, L/XL and XXL.
The S/M is 62" length, sports 33" sleeves and fits chest sizes 34-40. The L/XL is 64.5" in length, sports 34" sleeves and fits chest sizes 42-48. The XXL is 65" long and has 34" sleeves. Fits chest sizes 48 and up.

I got my coat from piratemerch, selling for about $100. As always, piratemerch took great care of me. This coat is defiantly rugged and very well made, and quite intimidating when worn. I tried out the L/XL size which fits just right when worn over my other apparel. Being full length the coat sits just a few inches off the ground when worn, which looks great (except on the stairs where I had to be careful to avoid stepping on the coat and tripping myself.) The three leg slits actually make maneuvering in this large coat very simple, and also make it possible to easily wear (and conceal) a sword when worn at the waist. The double laced collar looks very period and is a great feature, however wearing it in the up position may require some fabric stiffener. My favorite part of this coat is the sleeve cuffs. The cuffs are very wide and the braids add a simple flair.

Stormy Wearing Coat

The coat features an astounding 15 buttons, however the buttons are made of black plastic and are really the only thing on this coat that are out of place. I have heard of people painting their buttons to add a more realistic look, but I think simply replacing the plastic buttons with worn brass ones would be most effective. The coat does not have a lining, and thus there are very few pockets. With only two outer waist pockets, and I would have liked to see some interior pockets as well. or some way to help conceal some contraband.

All in all, this is a great simple, no frills coat, and for the price it cant be beat! So far it has withstood wind, salt, sand and ash (even powder burns) I don't foresee it breaking down any time in the near future. I intend to keep my coat, so don't be surprised if you find me wearing it the next time an event rolls around. This coat recieves 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
